J. K. Rowling packs a lot into 7 books. She delves into a lot of known mythology and shares her personal beliefs and struggles. Rowling is also known to hide great things in small details. I have no doubt that she thought long and hard about the birthdays of her main characters. Whether one believes in the zodiac or not, it is interesting how she ties characters' personalities to the day they were born. It also gives greater insight into the characters we love and hate!

Aries

  • James Potter (March 27)
  • Fred Weasley (April 1)
  • George Weasley (April 1)

It make sense the Weasley twins and a Marauder prince end up as Aries. After all, Aries is the baby of the zodiac and needs constant entertainment! They are known as intelligent pranksters and adventurers. They are a fire sign and their symbol is a Ram which makes sense; they're prone to getting in to trouble and "diving in" before thinking about the consequences. It's no coincidence that all the Aries ended up in Gryffindor!

Taurus

  • Pomona Sprout (May 15)

Hufflepuff is the "Earth" house at Hogwarts so it's not surprising that their Head of House (and Herbology teacher!) would be the first Earth sign, Taurus. The symbol of Taurus is a Bull which goes well with Sprout bring a sturdy woman. Those that fall under the sign of Taurus are known to be patient and loving. These are traits necessary to cultivate plants like Sprout does. She is also very protective, especially of her students and Hogwarts. She shows no hesitation throwing vicious plants at Death Eaters!

Gemini

  • Draco Malfoy (June 6)

Draco Malfoy is a very dualistic character. While he is very ambitious and self-involved, he is also exceedingly sensitive. After all, he was crying to Moaning Myrtle of all people! We also know that he didn't really want to kill Dumbledore. Selfish? Yes. Evil? No. He's also a clever boy who knows how to manipulate people to get what he wants, especially his father. Manipulation is a common Gemini trait. We know that he is also smart because he does come up with a very elaborate plan to allow Death Eaters to gain access to Hogwarts. Not everyone would have connected the dots with the usability of the Vanishing Cabinet. All of these characteristics go hand in and with the very intelligent sign of Gemini!

Cancer

  • Dudley (June 23)
  • Dobby (June 27)

These two characters are extreme examples of two different types of cancerians. Dudley is a very self-indulgent boy who eats what he wants and gets whatever material objects he wants. He's actually on the Cancer-Gemini cusp so it makes sense that he would share some traits with Draco Malfoy, as Harry noticed in the first book. His has the self-indulgence of a Cancer but the ability to manipulate like a Gimini.

Dobby shows the mostly positive sides of Cancer. He is very caring (almost anoyingly so) and will stop at no end to do what's right. He didn't even know Harry when he went to "save" him in the second book! Once he does grow to know and love a person he puts their needs before his own. Cancer's symbol is a crab and Dobby is definitely clingy. Sometimes he just won't leave Harry alone!

He would also take his friend Winky to the room of requirement when she drank to much and would look after her. He goes above the call and duty of the average house elf. He even dies for Harry while rescusing him in the last book. Dobby is a very maternal elf so it makes sense that he would be a Cancer, the mother sign of the zodiac.

Leo

  • Neville Longbottom (July 30)
  • Harry Potter (July 31)
  • Ginny Weasley (August 10)
  • Percy Weasley (August 22)

Notice, once again, every single member of a fire sign is a Gryffindor! Leo is the master-sign of the Harry Potter book. Even Rowling herself is a Leo! I don't think anyone will argue that it isn't a coincidence that the symbol of Leo is a Lion. It is a sign that is known for being a fierce protector of love ones. And if someone should ever hurt a love one, a Leo will not hesitate to seek vengeance.

Harry, Ginny and Neville all posses varying degrees of similar traits. They are all suborn, loyal and at times a little lazy too. None of them are the top student of their year but they are all exceed well in their passion. Ginny is good at Charms (Bat-Bogey-Hex anyone?) and Neville is a wiz at Herbology. Harry is also superb at Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Percy Weasley in on the cusp of Leo and Virgo so he has some traits of both. He has the passion of a Leo and wants to succeed. However, like a Virgo he tends to be practical and ruled by logic rather than fiery Leo emotion.

Virgo

  • Hermione Granger (September 19)

Unlike most of the Gryffindors Hermione is an Earth sign. Then again, she is rather unlike her fiery housemates. She is often the voice of logic for Harry and Ron. She, like Percy, is exceedingly practical. Some (Luna) may view this as narrow-mindedness. She is also intelligent and seeks perfection in everything she does and often expects the same from her friends. Virgos will not hesitate being overly-critcal of the people they care about. She, like many Virgos, is also very modest. (The symbol for Virgo is a virgin maiden.) Virgos often work beyond what's needed in life and this shows when Hermione writes too many inches on her essays. Some think Virgos are boring but they're the most hard-working of the lot!

Libra

  • Minerva McGonagall (Otcober 4)
  • Filius Flitwick (October 17)

Intelligent and quick-witted, it's no surprise that these two head-of-houses ended up as Libras. Libras want balance and despise conflict. They are also known to be very hardworking and grow more intelligent with age. If anything can be said about these two characters they are certainly wise! They like to keep the peace and that makes sense. Flitwick especially doesn't like to get involved in house rivalries.

Scorpio

  • Molly Weasley (October 29)

It's interesting that Rowling decided to place Molly as a Scorpio. Many think that she is better suited as a Cancer, the mother sign, but she's actually the epitome of a Scorpion. She is passionate and this shows itself in her relationship with her husband. She has 7 children! She is also a very powerful mother and if your cross her children you'll end up dead. Literally. Remember what she did to Bellatrix? Molly can be one determined woman. She won't back down in fights, something the Cancer sign is more likely to do. She fought very hard against Sirius to keep Harry out of the order meeting in the 5th book. And like a Scorpio she'll use whatever tactics bring the right result, even if it did mean making that stinging comment about Harry not being James.

Sagittarius

  • Bill Weasley (November 29)
  • Rubeus Hagrid (December 5)
  • Charlie Weasley (December 11)

Once again everyone in a fire sign lands in Gryffindor! The Sagittarians are the star gazing adventurers of the Zodiac. Their symbol is a Centaur and they will travel the world and the sky looking for answers. It's no coincidence that all their jobs require them to be around animals. They don't want to pursue a career where things come easy and need companionship no matter how crazy their life. They do whatever it is they want to do and don't consider conformity at all. Bill married Fleur and has long hair and rugged look. Charlie is off chasing dragons. Hagrid is a half-giant who likes keeping weird pets. They are all one of a kind, that's for sure!

Capricorn

  • Tom Riddle Jr. (December 31)
  • Severus Snape (January 9)

Snape and Voildemort show both similar and different traits common in Capricorns. Capricorns are known to hold a grudge and this shows itself in Snape's attitude towards The Marauders. He was willing to let Sirius get the Dementor's kiss for a crime he didn't commit. (Sirius did pull that rather horrible prank on Snape though, so it's almost understandable Snape would do this though definitely not excusable.) On the other hand Voldemort takes it over the top; he hates all muggles and believes in blood supremacy as a result of being abandoned by his muggle father. There were other factors, of course, but that's the foundation of his hate.

Both Snape and Voldemort are also very ambitious which is both a Slytherin and a Capricorn trait. The darkest trait that they both share the most though is that they are both miserable and seek comfort in the Dark. Neither of them ever had a chance at a "good" life. The sign of Capricorn is a seagoat and that couldn't be more accurate for Snape and Voldemort.. These two half bloods have been split between two worlds their whole lives. The main difference in them is that Snape possesses the Capricorn trait of unconditional love. Lily.

Aquarius

  • Lily Evans (January 30)
  • Arthur Weasley (February 2)

Aquarians can be very judgmental, something we saw with Lily in Snape's memories. Lily refuses to see things from Snape's side even though she knows he's had a difficult life. Aquarius can seem harsh and unattached at times, something that we don't see much in Arthur. However, they will do anything to ensure the safety of their children. Lily died for Harry after all! Their symbol is The Water Carrier and they will often provide for the needy and are known for Charity. Although judgmental they try to see the good in people. Aquarians are very loyal and we see this with Arthur sticking beside almost everything Molly says. At the end of the day what they want most is to be appreciated.

Pisces

  • Ron Weasley (February 29)
  • Remus Lupin (March 10)

The two underestimated Gryffindors are Pisces. They are emotional and don't have very high opinions of themselves. They often lead complicated lives but crave simplicity. Pisces are known to feel that they are never quite good enough. This is especially evident in Lupin's behavior with Tonks. Their symbol is two fishes and they are great to tell secrets to but are in turn very secretive themselves. They don't talk about feelings often even though they have a lot of them.

Unknown Signs

Here are some important characters who signs we don't know and my guesses.

  • Dumbledore - Intelligent and known manipulator
  • Luna Lovegood - Cancer or Scorpio - She believes in odd things and is very nurturing.
  • Sirius - Aries just like the rest of the pranksters!
  • Nymphadora Tonks - Pisces or Cancer - She has the emotional traits associated with water signs but I wouldn't place her as a Scorpio. I'm leaning more towards a Cancer-Leo cusp because we know she has some fire in her!

What sign do you think they are? Do you think any of the Harry Potter characters were placed in the wrong sign by Rowling?

Awesome hub! =) I sometimes think that Jo had some stereotypical zodiac signs, but she was also good at letting people see that there was more than just the first glance of a character.

Love this hub. Very cool way of looking into these complex characters. I think that Dumbledore is a Leo. He's so fiercely devoted to loved one's that he manipulates them to protect them.

i really love this! i've been a huge harry potter fan for years. my husband actually got me into it years ago. lol. and since then, we've religiously gotten all the books - even 3x went to scotland during the publication of book 5,6, and 7, and made it a point to see all of the movies with family and close friends. definitely i agree that j.k. rowling had all the characters in the right place. Rowling has a virgo moon, so it makes such perfect sense of her being to relate to Hermione too. thanks for posting this!
